For participating in Miles for Migraine - Atlanta 2023

My Story…

Hello! Thanks for taking the time to check out my fundraising page for Miles for Migraine. While I have heard about migraines all my life, and maybe even had one or two, I never understood how debilitating they can be or how chronic they are until my son began struggling with them.

Brennan, my 9-year old son, has been suffering from migraines since he was 4 years old. Brennan is truly one of the sweetest kids on the planet and has such a tender heart. He is tough and quiet, and rarely complains about the pain he is frequently in. Brennan not only gets intense head pain, he also gets pain in his eyes (including, recently, intense vision change for 3 days until he finally got relief from the migraine), nausea, fatigue, cyclical vomiting, sensitivity to light, motion sickness, and tingling sensations in different areas of his body. Those are just to name a few! He has been on daily medication since he was 4 and they only keep his headaches at a low pain level. It's not often he has long streaks of time without any head or eye pain at all. It's absolutely heartbreaking as a parent to see him in so much pain and discomfort and not be able to help him.

As you can imagine, the migraines impact many different areas of his life. He has missed school, he has missed soccer practice and games (one of his favorite things to do), he has even missed out on being in a wedding because his migraine caused a bout of the cyclical vomiting so he and I stayed in the hotel room while his sister lived her best life as a flower girl! There have been to many instances where he has had to miss out because he wasn't feeling good or he was in too much discomfort.

When the pain becomes too unrelenting, we make an appointment with his neurologist for an infusion. He gets hooked up to an IV for 1.5 hours and they pump him full of fluids and medications that can give him quick relief, but that relief is temporary. Sometimes it will last for a few weeks, sometimes only for a few days. But the migraines always come back and the cycle begins again. I was told recently that Brennan is the second youngest patient they  give infusions too.

We have wonderful doctors we work with who take good care of him, but there is still SO much to learn about migraines and different treatments options for them. This is an opportunity for me to try to give back to a community who has given our family, Brennan specifically, so much help and guidance. I hope that by continuing to fund research, they will be able to help other children and adults from suffering so much.

Thanks again for visiting. Any amount is greatly appreciated! The donations are tax deductible and the donations go back into the Atlanta migraine research community. If you are interested in doing the 5k or the 2k fun walk on April 1st, I would love to have you come out to support this great cause!
